Dentistry l Endoscopy Consultations:Consultations are available by appointment Monday through Saturday for medical and surgical concerns. We offer morning, afternoon, and evening appointments. We recognize that strong bonds can be formed between you, your pet(s) and a particular veterinarian. If you wish to see a specific veterinarian at your pet's visit please inform the receptionist when you make the appointment, and this may be easily arranged. Our receptionists will make every effort to schedule an appointment that is suitable for you, bearing in mind the urgency with which your pet should be attended to.
Radiology:Our Radiology Suite Radiographs (commonly known as x-rays) are diagnostic tools used by veterinarians to assess many medical problems. Not only can they identify broken bones, arthritis, and hip dysplasia, but radiographs are also used to assess heart size, and to look for tumours in the chest or abdomen, stones in the bladder, fluid in and around the lungs, and foreign bodies in the intestines. At our hospital both plain radiology and negative and positive contrast radiology are available. This means that we are equipped to identify all the problems listed above, as well as to do a barium swallow or barium enema to evaluate the stomach, small intestines or colon, and to inject air or dye into the bladder to identify tumours, stones, and other abnormalities not always visible on a plain radiograph. In 1996 Dr. Lewars was certified with the Pen Hip program and this method of screening for hip dysplasia can be arranged to be provided by our hospital. If your pet requires radiographs, click here for more details. Surgery and Anaesthesia:A variety of surgical procedures are performed at our hospital including spays and neuters, wound repairs, cystotomies (bladder surgeries), tumour excisions, intestinal surgeries, and some orthopaedic surgery. Our spacious surgery suite is glassed in on two sides which allows all interested clients to watch surgeries from the waiting room. Please ask your veterinarian if you would like a closer look. Our hospital is equipped with a range of inhalational and injectable anaesthetics and we tailor our anaesthetic protocols to meet the individual needs of each patient. The decision to use a particular anaesthetic (i.e. a light or heavy sedative, a local, or a general anaesthetic) is based on the depth of anaesthesia that is necessary, the age and health status of the pet, and the amount of pain relief required. We may recommend that your pet have blood work prior to an anaesthetic particularly if they are older, or if there are any health concerns. We welcome your questions about our anaesthetic protocols. DentistryTracy Cleaning Dakota's Teeth Dental Disease is a common problem of companion animals. The accumulation of dental plaque, tartar and infection can lead to several health concerns including chronic discomfort, bad breath, tooth root abscesses, tooth loss, and even infection of the internal organs. Please click here for more information on dental disease, its prevention and its treatment.
Endoscopy and Ultrasonography:Pets who require either of these types of diagnostic procedure can be seen in our hospital by a specialist in veterinary internal medicine who travels to us as necessary to perform these services. Electrocardiography (E.C.G)When a pet requires an electrocardiogram, we use a special transmitter to send our patient's E.C.G. over the telephone lines. A board certified consultant at the other end interprets the E.C.G. and provides us with a diagnosis and treatment recommendations. Abnormal heart rates and rhythms can be diagnosed and changes in the sizes of the heart chambers can also be extrapolated from the results. Depending on the severity of the situation, results can be obtained immediately, within the hour, or within twenty-four hours. Blood Pressure MonitoringBlood pressure monitoring can be a valuable tool with which to diagnose hypertension and to monitor treatment of the hypertensive pet. Hypertension can occur on its own, or can occur secondary to other diseases such as kidney disease, heart disease or hyperthyroidism, especially in cats. Blood pressure monitoring is also useful during anaesthesia and to assess critically ill patients. Our hospital is equipped with a blood pressure machine designed to meet the requirements of dogs and cats.
LaboratoryPat About to Run a Blood Sample An on-site laboratory provides us with the ability to do the majority of our diagnostic testing in-house. We recently purchased a new blood machine including a serum chemistry analyzer and hematology and electrolyte units. We can perform complete blood counts, routine blood chemistries, fecal analyses, immunological tests such as those for Feline Leukemia Virus, Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, Parvovirus and Dirofilaria immitis (Heartworm Disease), as well as urinalyses and some cytology. The biggest benefit of our new blood machine is our ability to closely monitor critically ill patients; many results will be now be available within minutes rather than within twenty-four hours as was previously the case. An added convenience will be the ability to do pre-anaesthetic blood work the morning of a surgery rather than several days in advance. The remainder of our laboratory testing, including serology, cytology, histology, and endocrine and immunological testing, is done at laboratories within Ontario and the majority of results are available within twenty-four to forty-eight hours. When necessary, other samples may be sent to laboratories across Canada and the United States.
